Jim Lehrer and Robert MacNeil came together to cover the 1973 Watergate hearings in the Senate. Together, they earned an Emmy Award and created one of the (now) most respected partnerships in television history.
Two years later, the pair debuted The Robert MacNeil Report which provided detailed coverage of a different topic every night. Jim Lehrer acted a a correspondent to MacNeil in Washington, D.C., while the show aired locally in New York. Soon after, it was re-named The MacNeil/Lehrer Report and began airing nationally, with the help of PBS.
Over the next seven years, the show earned 30 major awards. In 1983, it was renamed again, this time the title became The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour. Along with being the first of its kind, this program became the only hour-long nightly show to air in the United States.
In 1995, Robert MacNeil left the show, once again calling for a title change. It became known as The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. By 1996, Jim Lehrer directed the program to further success, and it launched it’s first website.
For the fourth time, the title was changed again to fit the shows new style in 2009. Being now called PBS NewsHour, it brought in new anchors, online, and on-air news operations. The changes were made to keep with the times, and cater to the public’s opinions.
Jim Lehrer left the program in 2011, and since then the show has been committed to providing important, accurate, and detailed news.
